Volunteers from Sweden on their way to Kenya

Two volunteers, an architect student and a young civil engineer, are contributing with their time, energy and expertise to The Humane School's project. They will gain experience in the field of social architecture and learn valuable lessons from the process.

Astri is an architecture student in her last year at Lunds Tekniska Högskola and Sara, her twin sister, is a freshly graduated civil engineer. Both are commited to participate in the design and implementation of the new facilities of The Humane School and decided to become volunteers for ASF-Sweden on this project. After a research phase from home, they are now on their way to Kenya where they will stay for about 2 weeks.

The activities that they plan to do during their trip include:

-Study visit of Mbagathi School in Nairobi.

-Study visit of Eco Moyo Education Center outside Mombasa.

-Documentation of the potential plot (ongoing purchase negociations)

-Continuation of the proposed layout on the site (See Sabine's workshop with the teachers, July 2018) , taking into account the incremental building process and the placement of the buildings on the site over time (phasing of the different steps)

-Proposals for classroom design: design, materials, construction technology, maintenance, involvement and participation of the local population, financial and educational opportunities for local businesses, etc ...

-Investigate the possibility of water collection, toilet solutions etc.

-Investigate the possibility of organic farming on the site.

Good luck, Astri and Sara !!
